Why Your “Screenshot Damage” is Lying to You (DPS vs. DPR)

Stop trusting the one big number you see on Reddit. That is “Screenshot Damage.” It looks great in a 5-second clip, but it fails the Spiral Abyss timer because it ignores the most important variable: Time.

To clear Floor 12, you need to understand the difference between DPS and DPR.

  • DPS (Damage Per Second): The theoretical max damage if your character never stopped hitting.
  • DPR (Damage Per Rotation): The actual damage you deal in a full 20-second combat loop, factoring in character swaps, dodging, and waiting for skills.

The “Energy Trap” Here is where most builds fail. If your Xiangling deals 50,000 damage per swing but has 0% Energy Recharge, she is useless for the next 15 seconds while you scramble to get her Burst back.

During that downtime, your DPS drops to zero.

A build with slightly lower Crit stats but 100% Rotation Uptime will always out-damage a “glass cannon” build that gets stuck waiting for energy. You need to master Particle Funneling—catching energy orbs on the right character—to keep your rotation smooth.

The “Invisible” Mechanics That Kill Your DPS

The game shows you ATK and Crit, but it hides the math that actually decides if you clear the Abyss. If you ignore these three mechanics, even a “perfect” artifact build will fail.

Internal Cooldown (ICD): Why You Can’t Vaporize Everything

You cannot trigger a reaction on every single hit. Most characters follow the Standard ICD Rule: you can only apply an element once every 2.5 seconds or every 3 hits.

This is why Hu Tao is top-tier: her Charged Attacks have no ICD, meaning she Vaporizes 100% of her hits. Compare that to Yoimiya, whose normal attacks get stuck on the standard timer, allowing her to Vaporize only her 1st, 3rd, and 5th shots.

This mechanic is part of Elemental Gauge Theory (EGT). If you don’t account for ICD, you are likely applying too much of the wrong element, ruining your reactions.

Motion Values (MV): Why ATK Stats Can Be Misleading

A 3,000 ATK stat means nothing on its own. Your damage is determined by the Motion Value (MV)—the percentage of ATK your Talent actually uses.

For example, a Level 10 Normal Attack might have an MV of only 80%, while an Elemental Burst has an MV of 900%. This is why a support character with low ATK can sometimes out-damage a main DPS with high stats.

Pro Tip: Always check the MV% in our calculator before you spend a Crown on a Talent. If the multiplier is low, the Crown is a waste of resources.

Snapshotting: The Secret to Infinite Buffs

Some abilities “lock in” your stats the moment you cast them. This is called Snapshotting.

If you cast Xiangling’s Pyronado while standing in Bennett’s circle, the Pyronado keeps the huge ATK buff for its entire duration—even if Bennett’s circle disappears or you run away. Understanding this allows you to extend short buffs for 10+ seconds.

Quick Snapshot List:

  • Snapshots: Xiangling (Burst), Beidou (Burst), Fischl (Skill), Ganyu (Burst).
  • Does NOT Snapshot: Xingqiu (Burst), Yelan (Burst), Raiden Shogun (Skill), Xiangling (Guoba).

Benchmarks: Is Your Build “Copium” or Gold?

Stop guessing if your artifacts are good enough. Use these mathematical standards to decide if you should keep farming or move on to the next character.

The Golden Ratio (1:2 Rule)

Consistency beats “big numbers.” A build with 50% Crit Rate and 200% Crit DMG is mathematically worse than 70% Rate and 140% DMG. If your Crit Rate is below 60%, you will fail the Abyss because you are flipping a coin on every hit. Always balance your ratio closer to 1:2.

Crit Value (CV) Calculator

To grade a specific artifact, use this simple formula:

$$Crit Rate \times 2 + Crit Damage = CV$$

  • 20 CV: Average. Use it for now, but keep farming.
  • 30 CV: Great. This is the standard for 36-star clears.
  • 40+ CV: Unicorn tier. Lock this immediately and stop farming.

Optimization Academy: Fix Your Rotation, Not Just Your Artifacts

You don’t need better gear; you need faster fingers. Most damage loss comes from sloppy inputs, not bad stats.

Animation Canceling

Every character has “end lag” on their attacks. You can skip this animation to squeeze in free hits.

  • Hu Tao: Use a Jump Cancel immediately after her Charged Attack connects.
  • Raiden Shogun: Use the N3C combo (3 Normal Attacks + 1 Charged Attack) to maximize damage during her Burst.

The Perfect Rotation Order

If you press buttons in the wrong order, you lose massive multipliers. Follow this strict sequence:

  1. Apply Element: (e.g., Apply Pyro with Bennett).
  2. Swirl (VV Shred): Switch to your Anemo unit (Kazuha/Sucrose) to trigger the Viridescent Venerer set bonus.
  3. Buff: Cast your long-duration buffs.
  4. DPS: Switch to your main carry and attack.

The “Reality Check” – Enemy Resistances & Defenses

Your damage against a test dummy is not your damage in the Spiral Abyss. This is the “Dummy Fallacy.”

Most players calculate their DPS against a standard target, but Floor 12 bosses have massive Resistance (RES) penalties that cut your numbers in half. A Physical DPS like Eula might hit 500k on a Hilichurl but only 150k on a Ruin Guard.

Common Enemy Resistances (The Math of Defeat):

FAQ

What is a good crit ratio?

Aim for a 1:2 Ratio. A solid standard is 70% Crit Rate and 140% Crit Damage. Never prioritize big Crit Damage numbers if your Rate is below 60%, or you will lack the consistency needed to clear timed content.

How is Genshin damage calculated?

The Simplified Damage Formula:
Total Damage = (Base ATK × ATK%) × Motion Value × Damage Bonus × Crit Multiplier × Reaction Bonus × Enemy Defense × Enemy Resistance

Does Elemental Mastery (EM) matter for Geo characters?

No. For Geo characters, EM only strengthens Crystallize shields. It does not increase damage output unless you are using specific niche artifact sets like Archaic Petra. Focus on DEF and Crit instead.
